This is a boxed set of the books 1 - 6 of the „Mortality Bites“ series and since there are a lot of cliffhangers at the ends of the respective books, I don’t really feel that each book is really separate from the others. It’s actually one story cut into pieces, so the boxed set deserves a better rating than each of the books on its own, because the lack of wrap-ups isn’t felt.As I said, the premises are very cool indeed: all the gods did actually exist, but people only realized that the day each living, thinking individual received the message in their minds that the gods just had enough and were leaving. All of them. And - boom - it’s a „godsgone world“. And there are a lot of implications for everyone, because all supernatural planes of existence ceased to exist as well and elves, demons, angels, you name it, found themselves mortal in the mortal plane, aka nowadays earth. They can still do magic, but they do have to „burn time“, as in shortens one‘s lifespan. Another consequence was that earthly supernaturals like weres, ghouls and vampires became human again. And this is, how Katrina Darling finds herself a three hundred year old ex-vampire, her body now 19 years old, in Montreal in university.She suffers from a lot of guilt because of the things she did as a vampire, think Buffy‘s Angel getting his soul back and feeling empathy and guilt and remorse. So Kat is on the one hand trying to just blend in, on the other hand she wants to atone for her past and when in the first book a librarian who was very kind to her is slaughtered in a gruesome way, she takes it onto herself to investigate and stop the threat.This is her first case, so to speak, but others follow and the scope and the stakes get bigger with each book. The plot is awesome, cool and interesting Jobs for Kat and her friends. And she as a character is very well fleshed out. Her motives and everything that makes her tick are very consistent. I liked following her a lot and it didn’t take me too long to read the 1200+ pages. What I did not believe was Kat‘s budding romance with her fully human 19 year old friend Justin. Kat is definitely someone who has lived for three hundred years, I love that the author lets her sound like that and not just some teen. But there lies the problem: Justin is a boy. A good boy, but I didn’t feel the romance here. Besides: Kat is a well formed character, the other people not so much. But I got to know Kat’s friend Deidre, the changeling, a lot better than I did Justin.There is also a crossover from another of Ramy Vance‘s series placed in the same world, whom I didn’t know before, one Jean-Luc Matthias. At the beginning I thought that I‘d like to read his series as well, but he made so many too-stupid-to-live decisions that I was quickly changing my mind about that.The last book ends on a huge cliffhanger (as do others in the set) and I was not amused. I hate cliffhangers. And I hate it, if I feel compelled to buy the next book to get the least kind of closure, which is why I won’t read on in the „Mortality Bites“ series. Purely out of spite. And it’s a sad thing, too, because world building and the main character are awesome. So if you don’t suffer from my „Cliffhanger- aversion“, by all means read the first six books of the series.
The collection was high praised and only costs 0,99€.So I got it and began immediately to read it.And it's awesome.Think of all the various believes through time are based on reality.And out of nowhere all deities decide at once, they have enough of earth and leave.Take that humanity.Because now the mythical creatures,without gods power, can't hide any more.And that's a whole new world.I kind of dig it and love the storytelling.So thanks for the books and love the price. : )
